The Time of Christmas Peace....

For me, as a child, the time after Christmas and before New Years was always called the time of Christmas Peace. You had just cooked an enormous Smorgasbord, so you didn't need to cook and the house just seemed to take care of itself or I didn't worry about it. We read, played games and just enjoyed each other. I love this time of year and being snowed in just makes it better! We are supposed to be getting more snow tomorrow. Since we have lived in Missouri, this is the most snow I can remember getting. I love it! May peace be with you and yours.

Once again it is Santa Lucia Day and Grandma Fish had a wonderful event planned! We all went over to her house in the evening and Grandpa had a pathway we walked thru the woods. It was lit with candles and we came upon a Christmas tree, a tomte, and then in the distance we heard Silent night being played on a trumpet. As we got closer to the sound we found Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. Then from the woods we heard Oh Holy Night being sung. After the song was over we all sang some carols to the baby and then hiked back thru the woods to the house where we had cocoa and Swedish bread. It was a lovely night and I hope a lasting tradition. Gid couldn't resist wearing the helmet and really looks like a swede! Our Lucias were so beautiful. As the evening was winding down we watched last years Christmas devotional where they sang the friendly beasts and again we had fun remembering when the kids were little and sang that to their Grandma.
We also remembered Josh and sang to him! Happy Birthday son and I hope you got rolls where ever you were!

First Snow!

On Sunday everyone came over for the first Presidency's message and we had our first snow! The kids were so excited and I love how new everything looks to a child. Even our tired old snowman stood a little taller under the admiring eye of a grandchild. Gideon was so excited to play in the snow and the kids were wearing any gloves available just to be able to go out! I love the picture of the back of their heads and just as I snapped the picture Jenna said I think I see Santa!

A couple of weeks ago we got a call from Gary Crisp..who is Ron's cousin. Gary's Dad is Lester and is Grandma (Irene) Doan's big brother.
So while we were out in Arkansas we were able to meet Lester's wife Laverne, and a few of the children. We had such a great time. It is amazing how quickly strangers become family! We are really looking forward to meeting many more cousins! We hear there are a passel of them.

While we were in Arkansas we had BIG rain! By some miracle we had an umbrella for every girl! They had a blast twirling and singing in the rain.

We also got a couple of shots with Phoebe and Jack. Years ago we made the kids puzzles with our pictures on them and I Phoebe loves them and wanted her own, so with a little bribery we got a great picture of them!

Olivia's Baptism

We traveled down to Arkansas to be part of Olivia's special day. We took Hannah and Katie with us as they are the next ones to be baptised. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner that afternoon and we are still stuffed!

Thankful Cactus

Years ago my Mom gave me a piece of a Christmas Cactus that belonged to my Aunt Linnea. My Mom has had her cactus as long as i can remember. ..and as long as I can remember I have have had this in my home. My children grew up with this cactus and it never ceases to amaze me with it's beauty. It generally blooms at thanksgiving time. This year I have been so busy at the quilt shop, that my plants have been a "bit" neglected. So last night as I rushed in from the shop to go to a class, I see this profusion of beauty out of the corner of my eye. My Thankful cactus is covered with blooms and it stops me in my tracks. So I take a moment to think of all the things I am thankful for, and the list is endless. Mostly I am thankful for a loving God who sends us constant reminders, and sometimes stops us in our tracks, to remind us of all we have to be grateful for. So today I am thankful. As I am thinking about all I have to be grateful for, I am tearing up and since I have to work soon and I didn't bring extra mascara, Suffice it to say that I am overwhelmed with the love that is shown to me on a daily basis. I am truly a blessed women. Thank you to all of you who bless my life and make me smile.

Awhile ago Katie was going on vacation and she was worried about her plant. It was about 2 inches high and she was taking very good care of it. She asked me if I would babysit her plant for her. Now it is about 8 inches and has a bloom! I don't know if you can see it but there are about 3 other buds that are ready to come out! So here you go Katie...I loved babysitting!

Gas and Steam Engine Show

This is one of the reasons why I LOVE small towns! We have a parade for everything! This weekend we have a Gas and Steam engine show. All the famers polish off their tractors and drive them in a parade down main street! Later on in the weekend we will have a parade of power, where the farmers will show off all their BIG tractors! It is a can't miss event! Yes there was even a GEO METRO in the parade! We also had horses and a few mules! I LOVE SMALL TOWNS!

It's GRADUATION DAY!
We finally turned the corner on my ankle healing.
The Doctor said to remember that I am NOT healed but that I have finally turned the corner and my X-Ray shows clear sign of bone growth! Still no exercising and back to the boot if there is any pain, but....for the moment I'm free!

Here I am today with my boot off. There is still alot of swelling as you can see. I had to loosen the buckles on my faithful Birkenstock, but I am out of the boot! I now have a new best friend ...

My Sister Melissa loves me! She usually calls me on my birthday and says...something is coming! I can see her little girl smile when she says it! She knows me so well and we are connected at the heart! I love this necklace that she sent and I will tell you a few of the reasons. 1. The pearl. Pearl is my birth stone and pearl is the symbol of love this year, for how many years I have been married (29). Pearls are sand that are continually polished and finally evolve as something beautiful. They come from the sea.
2. Hammered Metal and silver. I have never been on of those fru fru girls and I like things homemade. I love the idea of being hammered..as in being tempered and pounded into submission. We all work everyday at being better people and I have always been one of those that has to be hammered. I love the cleanness of refined silver. I love that they have to add things to it to make it stronger. I love the heaviness of the chain and the layered charms.
3. Words. I love words. Words have power! These words speak volumes to me and I love them. Thank you Melissa you too are known, understood and loved, my sister.

Roslyn sent me a towel with KANGAROO"S on it...if that isn't the most fun!

But look at the fun. When you open up the pin cushion you find an embroidered pin cushion with pockets on all sides loaded with fun treasures! There is a bookmark, some needles, a clothes pin...just look how amazing all this is!! I feel so blessed! I love the little scissors in the case, the thread, the pens and pencil, the tape measure with a sewing machine on it! Thank you so much. This is her first swap and mine also and I am sold! Thank you so much for trying so hard and doing so well! I love, love, love it!!

So amazing! This just reeks with excitement!
It is my Pin Cushion SWAP

So Roslyn from Australia was my swap partner and she wrapped everything so I would have more goodies to unwrap...so much fun!

Wiil you look at this...I am still reveling in happiness! Look at this darling pin cushion she made and embroidered and quilted and bound...just fabulous!

It also came with scissors in a case, thread, pens and a yoyo pencil! We aren't done yet!

June 11 and I am 52 years young, but ...look at this, "over the hill" balloon on a wheelchair.
Sadly this is where I sit everyday! It has been 6 months but by my next birthday I hope to be liberated!
Sarah greeted me with this on my birthday and we did laugh all day long!

Then Natallie came in and she had made me this amazing pin chushion and catch all. It is perfect and I love it! I love the fabric and I love the design. This had me smiling the rest of the day! Happy Birthday to me!

Civil War --Kingston, Missouri

We had a great time this last weekend in Kingston, Missouri. We were invited to make a quilt to raffle and be a part of the Civil War Reenactment festivities. It was a great weekend. Alan got to meet President Lincoln and Ron got a great new hat! And look at that AMAZING quilt show! We had a great showing and lots of participation! It was so much fun to all be out there together. We all got sunburned but we will live to do another quilt show...next weekend in Cameron! See you there.

The Swedes Came!

This was such a fun night! We had cousins come to visit from Sweden. They live about 20 miles north of Stockholm. You would have never known we hadn't known them forever! They just fit right in and we had such a great time with them. So Thomas, Babs and Anna we loved meeting you and really miss you. I guess we really do need to go to Sweden!

Alan sent this to me a few days ago and I like it! I hope it is a Swedish Proverb, but Swedish or not I like it! I am also excited as my cousins from Sweden are coming to Missouri to visit. My Mom knows them through email and doing Swedish family research on line and they are coming today! I hope the doctor will let me up on my leg as I want to meet them. We are having a family dinner on Saturday and I can hardly wait!

Spring Gardening

Even though I can't get in the garden, It just wouldn't feel like spring if I didn't get a few tomato plants in the garden. So Gideon helped Grandpa with the digging. He was so cute out there with his little rake! Now I will just lay around and wait for the tomatoes to appear!

Not for the faint of heart...

So the leg saga continues...after 17 weeks of healing, 5 weeks in a back board, 8 weeks in a cast, and 4 weeks in a boot, this is what my leg looks like. My doctor looked at it and said that is not right...no kidding! So he sends me off to the the orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon says I need surgery as it is a non union break. This means that the bones healed... just not together. So they will go in and cut off the ends of the broken bone, do a bone graft and and put in a plate. This will all happen next Monday. I will then have another 8 weeks in a boot. Jeeze Louise!

Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a special day for all of us. It's time to kiss and hug the sweetest thing in the world - our Mother! There is no way we can ever really thank our mother for all she does for us, nevertheless we must make it a habit to keep reminding ourselves of the various sacrifices she made while raising us. Thank you Momma for all you have done and continue to do for me, and all the generations you influence.

This is 4 generations of the girls in our family. What a legacy my Mother has given us, and I am just one of her daughters. These amazing and beautiful women and girls are my daughters and 1 daughter in law (I wish the other two daughters in law were there) and 10 wonderful grandaughters.

Lilac Day

I love Spring! One of the most favorite days in Spring is Lilac Day!! Lilac Day is a special day in the Doan house. We never know when it will be but it is the day that the lilac's bloom. On this day we pick several buckets of lilacs and take them to people we love! I still call my away children and exclaim over the phone...It's lilac day! and they know just what that means. This was a different lilac day...being in a wheel chair has totally slowed me down. I did get several bunches in the house and I took one bunch to the shop. That afternoon Jake and his family came over and when I told Jake it was lilac day, the first thing he said was can I take some home? The house will smell like lilacs for days! I love that they remember and love this day like I do!

and I gather armfuls of blossoms of blue.
I gather the armfuls the whole meadow over,
dear mother all flowers remind me of you!
I do thank my Mother and Dad for my love of flowers.

I love Spring! This is our Red BUD tree. It is an amazing gift after months of snow!

These flowers were a mystery! I found them on my table and I called several people who I thought might have sent them..but no, not them. Then on Sunday sweet sister Collette Steel said...did you find some flowers on your table? and the mystery was solved! Thank you so much. They are so beautiful and I feel so loved!

When ever Ron and I have a moment, Sarah always seems to have her camera around! I just need to brag on this guy! This amazing, caring, sacrificing guy! I have been wheel chair bound since Jan 12th when I broke my leg. He has never complained and has championed me continually. He has become a great cook, making me a meal even after working all night. He has always been this way our whole married life, but usually I can reciprocate and do for him too. But during this latest challenge, I have just been reminded how thankful I am for my great guy! Everyone needs one of these! Have a great day and thanks for letting me brag!

I have been busy...This quilt I made for our 29th anniversary! I love it and I love this pattern. It is a four patch and an hourglass. So easy and yet still so patchy. I scalloped the edge for extra fun. These quilts are going to be up on the shop blog but for those of you who don't regularly don't check that...and you should, I am posting them here.

Favorite Quilt

I know I have already posted this quilt BUT...Amy at Park CityGirl is having an online quilt show and I want to be a part of it! So here it is. I have been quilting for 15 years. I have made alot of quilts in that time and I have lots of favorites but this is the first real quilt that my husband has really poured his heart into. He chose the fabrics and did most of the cutting on this quilt and it makes it really special to me. This quilt was made to raffle for the Civil War Reenactment our county is holding. I love the colors, the hand appliqued soldiers and all the nights that went into it.

Still Broken!

After Easter was over, Ron went to work and everyone else went home Katie stayed the night to help me, as I am still broken.
I did get my cast off, but I am now in a boot, for 4 more weeks. My Doctor said I could try to cheat a little but he still didn't want me to put any pressure on my ankle. So I tried to cheat and it is not ready to be walked on! I will try again in a week or so. Katie was such a good helper! She got me water and went all by herself downstairs to get us a snack. It was good not to be alone. Thank you Katie!

We had a joyful family day yesterday. Natalie, Sarah and Jacob all came with their families. They were all in there Easter finery. We had such a fun day complete with a feast and Egg hunting.
Yes we are missing a picture of Sarah's Family. She took the pictures of everyone else but just couldn't get her family to cooperate. Oh Well....
Andrew came to Easter also and I believe HE started a plastic Easter egg fight. The egg fight was hilarious as Erinn and Seth had fallen asleep in the living room, where the kids were going thru their Easter treasures, and had no idea they were in the middle of a war zone.

We just had our Stake Conference and they talked again about getting out of debt and not getting in more debt, planting a garden and the importance of living frugally. For me this has been a necessity for most of my life and being the Polly Anna I am I have always made it fun. They quoted the famous
Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do with out!
My Mother, Father and Grandmother both taught me these skills. I am so thankful. I am so grateful this is not a hardship for me. I am also grateful I taught these values to my kids. They know how to live on a shoestring. When they were small I don't think they knew how we struggled. If all we had was potatoes to eat, we had a french fry bash! The less food we had the fancier my table setting! Macaroni tastes really good on China with candles glowing! So enjoy every challenge and see the blessings in it!

Talon's quilt

Now that Josh and Amanda have recieved the quilt I made for their new baby Talon, I can blog it! All they need is the baby! It is quilted in a car and truck pattern in green thread. The flannel on the back is so cute also cars and trucks! So come on Talon we are waiting........

Here are some of the things I have been working on for the shop!. It is pure joy for me to do. I love the pre cut fabrics. They are stress free fun. All these are made out of charm packs (5 inch squares) or layer cakes (10 inch squares). Sarah has such an eye for color and I love the patterns she chooses. Fun, Fun, Fun!

Civil War Quilt

Our County has their first Civil War reenactment coming up and our shop, Missouri Star Quilt Company decided to make a quilt to donate. So we got to work. Ron loves the Civil War and really wanted to be a part of this. It took awhile to settle on a pattern but we finally did and with a little modification we got started. Ron chose the fabric and colors. He is also responsible for the patterns for the union and confederate soldiers. Our good friend Amy hand appliqued the soldiers and I started piecing. It took some time but we are so pleased with the results. We need to quilt it and we will be ready to go. It goes on display in Kansas City in April. We will also be selling chances on this quilt. So watch the store blog for that info.

Wow this is a great day!
1. I got out of the house and went to the doctor and he told me I could get my cast off in 2 weeks!
2. I got to go to Wal-Mart! Who would have ever thought that would be a high-light of my day, week, month!
3. When we went to walmart they had this huge clearance tent and I was able to get a thingy to down load my pictures to my laptop so I can blog from home again yeah!

We also had a wonderful treat this last week..Hillary and her Family got to come up for a few days. Alex gets the man of the week award for entertaining his children so that Hillary was able to sew uninterupted! I don't think Dad's should get awards for doing what Mom's do everyday, but, the part about sewing uninterupted is priceless. She was able to finish one quilt and design another! Awesome!

The sweetest part was Jack and Grandpa were able to get in a good conversation and boy did he have things to talk about! I think this picture is so darling!

Job Relief.....

Well...Dad made it thru another job cut. After working for 15 years he is now low man. They have only 5 men left on a 20 man crew. Also newspapers are closing all over the nation as everything is being computerized, It's a strange place for him to be at 55 but in this economy we are grateful he has a job. He still has to work nights and that is hard for him so keep him in your prayers, but he is still employed yeah!!!

OK so now I really feel humbled! We have this amazing man in our ward named Wayne Brickey. He is church famous, but to us he is Brother Brickey. Any way he writes an article for Mormon Times and the one I read today is about Joseph Smith and SOME of the things he endured. It is amazing how after reading something like that how small my broken leg feels in comparison. I am so grateful to Joseph Smith and for the restoration of the Gospel and for all he endured to make it so. Thank you Brother Brickey for calling me to repentance and here is a quote that Alan read me last night,

Ok, So today I feel better. I have crazy sleep habits, as do several of my children. So at 2 in the morning I thought I would take a chance and see if Alan was awake and yeah!! he was. So I unloaded on him about everything I can't do. And everything I don't have control over, and he listened...I think...anyway I think that was what I needed because today I feel better! I have these great kids that allow me to rant and rave and still love me. They often repeat to me what i said to them in their youth (arrghh!) So again I am grateful. Thanks Kids!

So all my grandchildren are having a hard time with me not being around and available to them...So I got a call from Katie....Grandma I have an Idea...I have this other grandma, Grandma mason and she has a wheel chair with a motor on it and a van where this thing comes out and she gets on it and rides in the car. Grandma you should get one of those!
I should I say that would be nice.
Then not to be stopped she called about 2 days later...
Grandma...I've been thinking...If grandpa puts a board on the stairs you could just roll down them. I say Yeah but that would be really fast...GRANDMA YOU ARE NOT LISTENING TO ME! GRANDPA COULD PUT A BOARD ON THE STAIRS AND YOU COULD ROLL DOWN...Yes I say...he could.

still broken!

So I wanted to find this amazing quote about enduring or trials or something like that to make my point on this leg problem, but...no such luck so I just think I better tell you what is going on. I finally got a cast on my leg after 4 weeks. It is a different kind of sore now but I was feeling better until the Doctor said OK...see you in 2 months! Eight weeks seems like so much less than 2 months. But two months it is and I can't put any weight on my leg at all, so I am on crutches, or in a wheel chair or in bed. Sigh...Well if anyone come up with an encouraging quote, let me know, I really need it!

Valentines Day!

I had such a great day! I LOVE Valentines day. Ron is so sweet to me and always makes this day so special. I woke up this morning to an apple fritter from Lamars! I got to spend most of the day in the shop. We had an amazing day. We had about 25 women for our make and take class! We made darling tasket baskets. Everyone had a great time...but we really need a bigger classroom! It was so fun to get out to see all the quilt girls. I have been stuck at home with my leg so it was so nice to be out for a few hours! I have so much love in my life and I feel so blessed and Thankful. Happy Valentines day to all.

So I haven't been blogging for a while.
Excuse #1 NO internet
Excuse #2 Yep I broke my leg!

So there I was...in my shop. Big Al was video taping me. I was walking backwards and got my foot caught in a cord. I went down and heard a snap. Alan and Sarah are laughing and I am saying wait I think I broke my foot and Al says Whatever you want me to call 911 (total Sarcasm) I say yes and Sarah says no way are we having an ambulance come to the quilt shop. I was still laying on the floor and Alan was still filming. I say really I need to go to the Doctors. Alan bets me 10 dollars that it isn't broken. So for 3 weeks I have been on bed rest waiting for the swelling to go down so I can get a cast. The doctor said it was a good fracture. Tomorrow is supposed to be the day when are going to try to put a cast on. I will have to be in a cast for 12 weeks. Yuck!

But I have internet again so that is good news!

So today Spenser got his GED certificate in the mail and then set out to try again to pass his drivers test...which he passed with flying colors. Once you learn to stop at the stop signs, you can pass real easy!

So he gets in and is behind the wheel readjusting his mirrors and

When we went to Church...Natalie and Erinn went in and sat down and all the little kids followed them and sat on the same bench.. I thought it was so funny I had to take a picture. It looked liked they had 11 children and everyone kept coming up and shaking there hands. I bet the Primary President was having a fit!

Tom' s 50 th

So we got to go to Big Tom's 50th Birthday and all the blogs are so cute ...but none have a picture of Ron and I!! So I thought, to prove we were there and dressed up I had better post. If you will look closely, the earrings I am wearing are from my original 70's collection and the macrame headband I have on used to be a belt! Well time does march on.

We did have so much fun. We danced and ate and talked and ate and danced! The deco was amazing and they had pictures up of Tom in his younger days. They did such a nice job.

Snippets of Christmas

We had our Doan Family Christmas last night and more that half of our children weren't there! But what a time was had with the ones we had. Gid is truly addicted to SLUSH. All the kids are growing so much. Noah is 2 weeks older than Annie and was surprised to find out she was taller. We were so amazed at Ashely's army crawl. One of the things that I love is that the kids love each other so much. All the girls had fun with Katie's jewelry making present. We tried to talk about the real meaning of Christmas and when Annie was asked what the wise men brought she calmly replied Gold, Freakin sense, and myrrh. It was a wonderful night. I love my family.
